BIN (Bank Identification Number)

What is BIN (Bank Identification Number)?

A Bank Identification Number (BIN) refers to the first four to eight digits of a credit or debit card number. It identifies the financial institution that issued the card and provides details about the card type and geographic origin.

Payment processors use the BIN to route transactions to the correct network and issuing bank. It also helps merchants identify the card brand and level, such as whether it is a corporate or rewards card.

Why It Matters

  • Essential for routing transactions to the correct issuing bank

  • Helps detect potential fraud by identifying the card’s country of origin

  • Allows merchants to apply specific routing rules or surcharges based on card type

  • Provides insights into customer demographics and spending patterns
