Authentication

What is Authentication

Authentication is the process to verify that a user, device, or system is who or what it claims to be. It’s how a system ensures you are the right person accessing it.

For example, entering a username and password to log in to your email account is a form of authentication.

Why it matters:

Authentication is crucial for protecting sensitive information, securing systems, and ensuring that only authorized individuals can access digital resources.

Authentication vs. Authorization:

  • Authentication: Answers the question, Who are you? To verify your identity, such as by requiring a password or biometric scan.

  • Authorization: Answers the question, What are you allowed to do? It determines the level of access or permissions you have after being authenticated.

How Does Authentication Work?

  • The user registers with the system, providing credentials like a password, PIN, or biometric data.

  • These credentials are securely stored, often in encrypted form, in a database.

  • When a user tries to log in, they provide their credentials.

  • The system checks the provided credentials against its stored data. If they match, the user is authenticated and granted access.
