Payment Rails

What is Payment Rails?

Payment rails are the underlying technical networks and infrastructure that facilitate the movement of money between financial institutions. They are the “tracks” on which digital payments travel from the sender to the receiver.

Examples of payment rails include the ACH network for bank transfers, the Visa/Mastercard networks for card payments, and the SWIFT network for international wires. Each rail has its own speed, cost, and geographic reach.

Why It Matters

  • Determines how quickly funds move from a customer to a merchant

  • Influences the cost of processing different types of transactions

  • Defines the geographic boundaries and reach of a payment system

  • Supports the reliability and security of the global financial ecosystem
