Partial Capture

What is Partial Capture?

Partial capture is a transaction where a merchant finalizes only a portion of the total amount that was originally authorized. This often happens when an order is split into multiple shipments or when some items are unavailable.

When a partial capture occurs, the remaining authorized funds are typically released back to the customer’s available balance. This allows for flexible fulfillment while ensuring the customer is only charged for what they receive.

Why It Matters

  • Supports complex fulfillment workflows where orders are shipped in stages

  • Improves customer trust by only charging for items that are actually delivered

  • Reduces the need for processing refunds for unavailable products

  • Helps manage authorization holds more effectively for multi-item orders
