Card Skimming
What is Card Skimming?
Card skimming is a method used by criminals to steal credit card information by attaching a small, illegal device to a legitimate card reader, such as an ATM or gas pump. The device captures the data from the card’s magnetic stripe while the user performs a normal transaction.
Why It Matters
-
It allows fraudsters to create counterfeit cards or make unauthorized online purchases using the stolen data.
-
Skimming devices are often very difficult to detect with the naked eye, making them a persistent threat at physical points of sale.
-
The transition to EMV chip cards has significantly reduced the effectiveness of traditional magnetic stripe skimming.
