Representment
What is Representment?
Representment is the stage in the chargeback process where a merchant submits evidence to the card issuer to prove that a disputed transaction was valid. If the merchant wins the representment, the funds that were initially withdrawn during the chargeback are returned to their account.
Why It Matters
-
It is the primary way for merchants to fight back against “friendly fraud” and recover money from illegitimate disputes.
-
Successful representment requires meticulous record-keeping, including proof of delivery, customer communication, and signed contracts.
-
Winning representments can help improve a merchant’s reputation with banks and card networks over time.
