What is Acquiring Bank?

An acquiring bank is a licensed financial institution that enables merchants to accept credit and debit card payments. It provides the merchant with a merchant account and handles the communication with card networks to authorize and settle transactions.

The acquiring bank is responsible for the security of the transaction data and the eventual deposit of funds into the merchant’s account. They often partner with payment processors to handle the technical aspects of transaction routing.

Why It Matters

  • Provides the essential merchant account required to process card payments

  • Guarantees payment to the merchant for authorized transactions

  • Ensures that merchants comply with Payment Card Industry (PCI) standards
