Debit Card

What is Debit Card?

A debit card is a payment card that deducts funds directly from a customer’s checking or savings account. Unlike a credit card, it does not involve a line of credit; the transaction is limited by the amount of money available in the account.

Debit cards are widely used for everyday purchases and ATM withdrawals. For merchants, they often carry lower processing fees than credit cards because the risk of non-payment is lower.

Why It Matters

  • Provides a convenient way for customers to spend their own money

  • Generally results in lower transaction costs for merchants

  • Reduces the risk of consumer debt by limiting spending to available funds

  • Supports both PIN-based and signature-based processing methods
