Acquirer

What is Acquirer?

An acquirer is a financial institution that maintains a merchant’s bank account and processes credit or debit card transactions on their behalf. They provide the necessary infrastructure to accept card payments and ensure funds are routed from the customer’s bank to the merchant.

Acquirers play a central role in the payment ecosystem by managing risk and ensuring compliance with card network rules. They are often referred to as acquiring banks or merchant banks.

Why It Matters

  • Enables merchants to accept electronic payments from customers

  • Manages the technical connection to card networks like Visa and Mastercard

  • Assumes financial risk for the transactions processed through their systems

  • Facilitates the transfer of funds into the merchant’s bank account
