## The Company

**Scira AI: replacing 20 tabs with one answer**

Scira AI was built to fix a broken internet experience--searching across dozens of tabs just to find one reliable answer.

Instead, Scira reads, understands, and synthesises information across the web, returning a single, sourced response. It integrates with tools like GitHub, Notion, and Slack, turning research into a faster, more focused workflow.

Built as an open-source project and free for its first nine months, Scira grew through community, trust, and organic discovery.

Today, it serves users from 15+ countries, with the US at the top, India second, and a growing spread across the UK, Canada, Germany, Brazil, Colombia, France, and beyond. That global footprint is exactly what made choosing the right payment infrastructure so consequential.

## The Challenge

When Scira decided to monetise after nine months of operating for free, Zaid chose Polar as the payment processor. It was a reasonable early decision. But as Scira's user base grew and the geographic distribution of paying customers became clearer, a structural problem with Polar emerged.

It worked initially, but quickly revealed a major limitation. Polar had no Indian payment support. Every transaction was collected in USD, with no local payment methods and no UPI integration. For Scira's Indian users--the second-largest segment of the audience after the US--this was a genuine barrier.

UPI is not a niche preference in India. It is the dominant payment method, trusted by hundreds of millions of people. Asking Indian users to pay in dollars via card on a platform they had only just started paying for was asking them to take an extra step of friction at exactly the moment when trust needed to be built.

> "Polar had a lot of limitations. They didn't have Indian payments integration, so they were just collecting USD. It was a problem for my Indian users--they wanted to pay with UPI and whatnot."
>
> -- Zaid, Founder, Scira AI

At the same time, operational issues started to surface. Managing users and subscriptions was difficult--there was no self-service portal, and users had to reach out directly for even simple changes like upgrades or cancellations.

> "It was really hard to maintain all the users there. And Polar also had a lot of issues going on. There are a lot of things we like to track on Dodo and that just wasn't there with Polar enough."
>
> -- Zaid, Founder, Scira AI

For a solo founder, this meant growing support overhead and less time spent building. A payment system that worked at launch was quickly becoming a bottleneck.

## The Solution

### A payment layer built for how users actually pay

About one and a half months into using Polar, Zaid found out about Dodo Payments. He got in touch with the Dodo team and started working through what a migration would look like.

As a Merchant of Record, Dodo handles:

- Tax collection and compliance globally
- Localised currencies and pricing
- Support for local payment methods, including UPI
- Subscription management via a self-service customer portal
- Built-in analytics and tracking

This directly addressed Scira's biggest gap: enabling Indian users to pay the way they're used to.

> "I was in constant touch with Rishabh about it. I was like, let's just bring it into the main interface. And when UPI becomes live, it will be like an easy way to just tell the users--it's just there. And if you go to checkout now, it will just be there for you."

Even before full subscription support for UPI was live, Zaid made the decision to switch, confident in the direction and roadmap. That decision paid off. UPI for subscriptions arrived, and Scira's Indian users now have the checkout experience they originally asked for.

## The Implementation

### A seamless migration and new pricing in hours

The switch from Polar to Dodo was smooth and required no major changes.

With compatible integrations and clear documentation, Scira was able to migrate without reworking its existing setup or disrupting active users. Subscription data carried over cleanly, and the checkout experience was up and running within the same flow.

Shortly after, Zaid introduced a new pricing tier--something he expected to take significant effort.

What would typically require backend changes, database updates, and billing logic adjustments took just a couple of hours. By creating a new product in Dodo and connecting it, the plan was live immediately.

Upgrades between plans were handled automatically through prorated billing, ensuring users only paid for what they hadn't already used.

> "I had the idea that I had to add one more plan. I was thinking it might take a lot of time with Dodo to do that. But I was wrong, it was pretty seamless. It took me like an hour or two to get that done. We didn't even have to do any database migration at all."

This reinforced a key shift: payments were no longer a constraint--they were flexible and easy to build on.

## The Results

### From blocked markets to global scale--without added complexity

Switching to Dodo Payments didn't just fix a missing feature--it removed the friction that was limiting Scira's growth across markets.

With a reliable checkout, local payment support, and built-in subscription management, Scira can now serve a global user base without adding operational overhead.

### India unlocked and trust increased

Indian users, previously blocked by a USD-only checkout, can now pay using familiar methods like UPI.

This immediately removed friction at the point of purchase, but more importantly, it improved trust.

Many users who initially preferred UPI transitioned to card payments after experiencing the checkout, signalling confidence in the payment flow rather than hesitation.

### Global payments across 15+ countries

Scira now collects payments from users across 15+ countries, including the US, India, UK, Canada, Germany, Brazil, and more.

With localised pricing and payment methods, the checkout experience now adapts to users instead of forcing them into a single flow--making it easier to convert globally.

### Support reduced to near zero

Before Dodo, even simple subscription changes required direct interaction.

Users had to message Zaid to upgrade, downgrade, or manage billing, creating a growing support burden.

With Dodo's self-service customer portal, users now handle everything independently.

Payment-related support requests have dropped to just **1-2 per month**, freeing up hours of time for a solo founder.

### Faster iteration on pricing and plans

Adding new pricing tiers or adjusting plans is no longer a technical project.

With flexible infrastructure and built-in features like prorated billing, Scira can launch and experiment with pricing in hours, not days.

This allows the product to evolve quickly without being held back by payment limitations.

### A system that scales with growth

From payment methods to pricing models, Scira's infrastructure is now built to support global expansion--without needing constant adjustments or workarounds.

> "There is basically minimal contact about payments to me--one or two customers who contact me. The rest of them can manage their payments and subscriptions from the portal. That also saves a lot of time for me. I would 100% recommend Dodo Payments for the first time you are building."
