## Google Search As You Knew It Is Ending

### TL;DR

- Google is moving deeper into AI-first search with Gemini integrated directly into the search experience.
- This changes how discovery works, people are increasingly asking AI systems for answers instead of browsing links.
- SEO alone is no longer enough. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is becoming just as important.
- We went through this shift ourselves and had to rethink how our content was structured for LLMs.
- That's exactly why we built and open-sourced [DualMark](https://github.com/dodopayments/dualmark) for AI-readable infrastructure.

## Hello everyone,

I was reading Google's latest announcements a few hours ago, and one line kept standing out to me.

Search as we know it is changing.

Google is pushing Gemini directly into the search experience, turning traditional search from a list of links into something much more conversational and AI-driven.

At first, it sounds like a product update.

But the more you think about it, the more it feels like a structural shift.

Because when people stop searching and start asking, the internet itself starts behaving differently.

## The Signal

For years, the internet was optimized around search engines.

You ranked on Google, optimized pages for keywords, improved backlinks, and competed for clicks. SEO became one of the core growth levers for internet companies because discovery depended on search rankings.

But AI changes the interface completely.

People are increasingly turning to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini not just for information, but for opinions, recommendations, comparisons, and decision-making.

That changes what "visibility" means.

Because AI systems don't behave like traditional search engines. They don't just crawl for keywords. They prioritize structured information, semantic clarity, contextual relevance, discussions, citations, and trusted sources across the internet.

That's why AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is starting to matter much more.

And once Google fully shifts toward AI-first discovery, that transition accelerates even faster.

## Where Things Start to Break

A lot of websites still assume humans are the only audience reading them.

But increasingly, AI systems are becoming the layer between users and the web itself.

That means if your website is difficult for LLMs to parse, understand, or contextualize, you become less visible, even if your product is good.

We ran into this ourselves.

There were cases where our documentation, pages, and product positioning made sense to humans, but weren't being interpreted cleanly by AI systems. Once we started restructuring content to make it easier for models to read and reference, visibility improved significantly.

And it wasn't just website structure.

We realized that LLMs increasingly pull information from places like Reddit, X, GitHub, engineering blogs, forums, and technical discussions. That changed how we approached distribution entirely.

Because in an AI-driven discovery layer, authority isn't just built through backlinks anymore. It's built through references.

## How To Think About This

Here's how to approach this if you're building today:

1. **Optimize for answers, not just rankings** -- Traditional SEO focused on clicks. AEO focuses on becoming the answer AI systems surface directly.

2. **Structure content semantically** -- Clear hierarchy, readable documentation, proper metadata, and contextual clarity matter much more for LLM interpretation.

3. **Build presence where LLMs learn from** -- Reddit, X, GitHub, forums, and technical blogs increasingly shape how models understand products and companies.

4. **Treat AI systems as a discovery layer** -- Your users may never visit a search results page. Their first interaction with your product could happen through an AI-generated response.

5. **Make your infrastructure machine-readable** -- The easier your product, docs, and APIs are for AI systems to parse, the easier it becomes for them to reference and recommend you.

## What We Shipped

This is exactly why we built [DualMark](https://github.com/dodopayments/dualmark).

We realized pretty quickly that most websites are optimized for humans first and AI systems second, even though that balance is starting to change rapidly.

So we built infrastructure specifically designed to help make content easier for AI systems to interpret, structure, and reference correctly.

And instead of keeping it internal, we open-sourced it.

Because we think this shift affects everyone building on the internet right now, especially startups that rely heavily on discovery.

The goal is simple:

If AI becomes the new discovery layer, your website needs to communicate clearly not just to users, but to the systems guiding them there.

DualMark, the AEO infrastructure your marketing site is missing

## How To Get Started

Here's how to start thinking about AEO practically:

- Audit your website structure and documentation hierarchy.
- Make key product information easy to parse semantically.
- Publish content in places LLMs frequently reference.
- Focus on clarity over keyword stuffing.
- Build technical documentation that AI systems can navigate easily.
- Test how tools like ChatGPT or Claude interpret your company and product today.

You'll probably be surprised by what they miss.

## One Last Thought

The shift from SEO to AEO won't happen overnight. But the interface layer of the internet is already changing.

People are asking AI systems what to buy, what to use, what to trust, and what to build with. And increasingly, those systems are deciding what gets surfaced first.

That changes the game completely.

Because the companies that win distribution tomorrow may not just be the ones ranking highest on Google.

They'll be the ones AI understands best.
