### TL;DR

- Kimi K3 has surprised the AI industry by delivering performance that rivals Claude and OpenAI on many tasks while being significantly cheaper and open-weight.
- It reminds us that great companies don't always invent new categories, they often make existing technology more accessible.
- In [Dodo Payments v1.109.0](https://docs.dodopayments.com/changelog/v1.109.0), we completely rebuilt Analytics with real-time insights, customizable dashboards, and shareable chart cards, alongside paid trials, trial misuse prevention, multi-account payouts, flexible global pricing, and more.

Hello everyone,

One of the most interesting AI launches I came across this week wasn't from OpenAI or Anthropic.

It came from Moonshot AI. Their newest model, Kimi K3, has quickly become one of the most talked-about releases in the AI community. Developers have been comparing it alongside Claude Fable and OpenAI's latest models, not because it introduced an entirely new way of interacting with AI, but because it delivers remarkably competitive performance while being dramatically cheaper and open-weight.

Unsurprisingly, the internet immediately began asking the same question it always does whenever a strong model emerges from China: Has China finally caught up?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

But after reading through the discussions and benchmarks, I don't think that's the most interesting takeaway.

The bigger lesson isn't about which country is winning the AI race, it's about how some of the biggest opportunities come from making an existing product dramatically better rather than inventing an entirely new category.

## The Signal

Founders often believe the only way to build a successful company is to create something the world has never seen before. Every startup wants to discover the next breakthrough, the next category, or the next revolutionary idea.

Sometimes that's exactly what happens.

But if you look at many of the companies that have gone on to dominate their markets, a different pattern starts to emerge.

Google wasn't the first search engine. Zoom wasn't the first video conferencing platform. Linear wasn't the first project management tool. Cursor wasn't the first AI coding assistant.

None of them created their category, but each of them made an existing experience noticeably better.

Kimi K3 feels like another example of that principle. It isn't trying to redefine what an LLM is. Instead, it's proving that delivering comparable quality at a significantly lower cost can be just as disruptive. For many developers, that alone is enough reason to give it a serious look.

People rarely wake up hoping to learn an entirely new workflow. More often than not, they simply want the product they already love to be faster, cheaper, simpler, or easier to use.

## Why This Matters

I think this is an important reminder for every founder.

It's easy to become obsessed with novelty. We spend countless hours asking ourselves, "What's the next billion-dollar idea?" when the better question is often much simpler: "What's already working that people wish was better?"

Customers don't reward innovation simply because it's new. They reward products that make their lives easier.

If someone can achieve the same outcome for half the price, with fewer clicks, less complexity, or a smoother experience, that's often enough to shift an entire market. Accessibility becomes a competitive advantage. Convenience becomes a competitive advantage. Affordability becomes a competitive advantage.

Innovation isn't always about inventing something nobody has ever imagined before. Sometimes it's about taking something millions of people already use and removing just enough friction that they never want to go back.

## What We Shipped

The same philosophy shapes how we build Dodo Payments.

This month, the biggest update is Analytics v3, a complete rebuild of our analytics dashboard. Rather than adding more charts, we focused on giving founders a clearer picture of their business the moment they log in.

The new dashboard brings together real-time revenue, one-click period comparisons, revenue by country, payment health, retention cohorts, MRR, churn, and recovery metrics into a single workspace. We've also introduced customizable dashboards, allowing you to arrange widgets around the metrics that matter most to your business, along with shareable chart cards that let you export beautifully branded analytics for investor updates, team reports, or social posts in just a few clicks.

Alongside Analytics v3, we shipped a number of improvements across the platform:

- **[Paid Trials](https://docs.dodopayments.com/changelog/v1.109.0#2-paid-trials-for-subscriptions-%26-checkout)** for subscriptions and checkout, giving founders more flexibility than traditional free trials.
- **[Trial Misuse Prevention](https://docs.dodopayments.com/changelog/v1.109.0#3-prevent-trial-misuse-on-subscriptions)**, helping stop customers from repeatedly redeeming trial offers.
- **[Payout Accounts](https://docs.dodopayments.com/changelog/v1.109.0#4-payout-accounts)**, making it easier to manage multiple bank accounts across currencies and payout methods.
- **[Product & Add-on Pricing in Any Chargeable Currency](https://docs.dodopayments.com/changelog/v1.109.0#5-product-%26-add-on-pricing-in-any-chargeable-currency)**, so you can price products in the currency that makes the most sense for your market.
- **[Native Google and GitHub social login](https://docs.dodopayments.com/changelog/v1.109.0#7-native-social-login-in-the-mobile-app)** across our desktop and mobile apps.

Taken together, these updates reflect the same idea behind this week's newsletter. Sometimes the biggest improvements don't come from building something entirely new, they come from making the product people already rely on dramatically better.

## Builder Spotlight

This week's Builder Spotlight is Scira AI, an open-source AI search engine that's rethinking how we find information online. Instead of jumping between dozens of tabs, Scira reads, understands, and synthesizes information from across the web into a single, sourced answer.

After spending its first nine months completely free, Scira began monetizing and quickly discovered that its second-largest market, India, couldn't pay the way users expected. Their previous payment provider only supported USD card payments, creating unnecessary friction for users who preferred local payment methods like UPI.

That's where [Dodo](https://dodopayments.com/case-studies/scira-ai) came in. By handling localized payments, subscriptions, taxes, and compliance, Scira could focus on improving the product instead of rebuilding its payment infrastructure. Today, they're serving customers across 25+ countries, have seen 3x revenue growth since switching, and can launch new subscription plans in under 24 hours.

It's another great reminder that sometimes removing friction isn't just good for customers, it's what helps great products keep growing.

## One Last Thought

Every generation of technology creates two kinds of companies.

The first to invent something entirely new.

The second takes that innovation and makes it accessible to millions more people. History has room for both.

But if there's one lesson I took away from Kimi K3 this week, it's that you don't always have to reinvent the wheel to build something remarkable.

Sometimes, building a better wheel is more than enough.
