## TL;DR

- UPI has officially launched in Greece, expanding its global presence to 10 countries.
- Local payment methods are increasingly crossing borders instead of staying within them.
- This could become the norm as more systems like Pix, Klarna, and others expand internationally.
- Founders who prepare for localized payments today will have a significant advantage tomorrow.
- We shipped Localized Pricing in Dodo Payments [v1.106.0](https://docs.dodopayments.com/changelog/v1.106.0#new-features) alongside several other improvements.

Hello everyone,

I was reading about UPI's latest expansion earlier this week.

India's Unified Payments Interface has officially launched in Greece, making it available across ten countries. Just a few years ago, UPI was viewed almost entirely as India's domestic payment infrastructure.

Today, it's steadily becoming part of the global payments ecosystem.

At first glance, this looks like another international rollout. I think it's something bigger.

It feels like the beginning of a broader shift where local payment methods are no longer confined to the countries they originated in.

## The Signal

For a long time, payment methods largely stayed within national borders. UPI belonged to India. Pix belonged to Brazil. Klarna was strongest across parts of Europe.

Each system evolved around local consumer behavior, banking infrastructure, and regulation.

But that's beginning to change.

As software businesses become increasingly global, these payment methods are slowly travelling with their users. Tourists, international students, remote workers, global businesses, and cross-border commerce are creating demand that didn't exist a few years ago.

UPI expanding across Europe may not be the exception. It may be the start of a much larger trend.

And if that happens, we shouldn't be surprised to see more payment methods like Pix, Klarna, or others becoming increasingly available outside their traditional markets.

## Why This Matters

Most founders still think globally but charge locally.

They build products for customers around the world, yet often assume everyone will happily pay using the same checkout experience.

History suggests otherwise. People prefer paying with methods they already know and trust. The easier you make that decision, the more likely they are to complete the purchase.

There's an old saying:

_The early bird gets the biggest worm._

The same idea applies here.

Founders who begin supporting localized payment experiences today will be much better positioned if these payment methods become increasingly global over the next few years.

Infrastructure is easiest to build before you desperately need it.

## How To Think About This

If you're selling internationally:

1. Local expectations matter. Customers don't just buy products. They buy using payment methods they already trust.

2. Don't assume cards are enough. The global payments landscape is becoming much more diverse.

3. Price locally, not just globally. A local payment method feels even more natural when paired with local pricing.

4. Build for where payments are going. The companies that prepare early rarely have to catch up later.

## What We Shipped

The shift toward localized payments is something we've been preparing for as well.

One of the biggest additions in Dodo Payments [v1.106.0](https://docs.dodopayments.com/changelog/v1.106.0#new-features) is [Localized Pricing](https://docs.dodopayments.com/features/localized-pricing).

Instead of relying on live exchange rates, founders can now define fixed prices by country or by currency. That means customers see pricing that's tailored to their market, creating a more familiar and predictable buying experience while giving businesses greater control over their global pricing strategy.

We also introduced [support for several new payment methods](https://docs.dodopayments.com/changelog/v1.106.0#2-new-payment-methods-satispay-blik-%26-klarna-for-subscriptions) and expanded existing ones across multiple markets.

- **Satispay** is now available for both one-time purchases and subscriptions in EUR, making recurring billing easier for customers in Italy.

- **BLIK**, Poland's most popular online payment method, is now supported for one-time payments in PLN, helping founders better serve one of Europe's fastest-growing digital payment markets.

- **Klarna** can now be used for subscriptions on USD checkouts with US billing above the $50 minimum, previously it was limited to one-time payments.

Taken together, these updates reflect a much larger shift.

As local payment methods continue expanding beyond their home markets, founders shouldn't have to rebuild their payment infrastructure every time customer expectations evolve.

Our goal is to make sure businesses can sell globally while still offering payment experiences that feel local.

## Builder Spotlight

This week's Builder Spotlight is [Mole](https://dodopayments.com/case-studies/mole), and it's honestly a tool I think almost everyone around me uses, including myself.

So I was genuinely surprised when I came across the story behind it.

What started as a simple open-source Mac utility built by Tw93 has now grown into a paid Mac application serving more than 10,000 customers across 16 countries, all with virtually no marketing spend.

As demand started coming from around the world, they needed a payment platform that could support global customers without forcing a solo founder to build payment infrastructure from scratch.

That's where Dodo came in. Instead of worrying about international billing, taxes, compliance, and licensing, Tw93 could stay focused on improving Mole and serving the community that had already grown around it.

It's always inspiring to see open-source projects evolve into sustainable businesses, and we're happy to be powering payments as they continue to scale.

## One Last Thought

The internet made software global. Payments are finally catching up.

As more local payment methods begin crossing borders, the companies that adapt early won't just offer more payment options.

They'll offer a buying experience that feels familiar, no matter where the customer comes from.

And more often than not, those small moments of familiarity are what turn global users into paying customers.
